This month we marked World Mental Health Day with the announcement of our newest training, Black Perinatal Mental Health. We are thrilled to be able to offer this new 6-credit training led by Dr. Marissa Long of ARC Counseling and Wellness designed to help health professionals better support the mental health of their Black birthing patients. Read on to learn more about this new training and available scholarships, and learn more about Dr. Long in this month’s Seleni Spotlight.

New Training: Black Perinatal Mental Health

We are excited to offer a new training exclusively focused on Black perinatal mental health. This one-of-a-kind training, taught by Dr. Marissa Long of ARC Counseling and Wellness and funded by Kate Spade New York, is focused on the clinical aspects as well as historical and cultural determinants of and impacts on Black maternal mental health and equips students with the knowledge, training and resources to better support their clients in the Black birthing community. The training is 6 hours/6 CE credits and will be available in mid-December. Enroll by December 16 for a 25% discount with code BPMH25. Seleni Scholarship for Maternal Mental Health Professionals

We are accepting applications through December 30 for the current round of scholarships for The Maternal Mental Health Intensive for Young Parents: Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders. These scholarships are designed to support health professionals and students working with underserved populations.

Study: Mental Health Post-Maternity Leave

A new study in the Maternal and Child Health Journal focuses on the role that return to work plays in a working mother’s mental health post-maternity leave. Not surprisingly the study found worse mental health outcomes when there is a greater conflict for women among their two roles as employee and parent. Read more.

UK Study: Inadequate paternity leave negatively impacts mental health

Another study out of the UK finds half of parents saying inadequate paternity leave had negatively impacted their mental health. In addition to the negative impacts on fathers – from struggles with bonding with their new baby to relationship challenges – 73% of mothers said they felt abandoned. Koru Kids and The Fatherhood Institute, which jointly led the research, are advocating for increased paternity leave time in the UK. Read more.

APA Repro Health book

APA Special Report on Women’s Reproductive Mental Health 

The American Psychiatric Association has published a special report outlining fundamental principles of reproductive psychiatry as discussed in a new Textbook of Women’s Reproductive Mental Health. The authors note the need to expand educational resources and reduce gaps in care and research, especially for LGBTQ+ and transgender/gender fluid patient populations and women affected by racial and socioeconomic disparities. Dr. Long is a licensed clinical psychologist with a specialty in reproductive mental health and an organizational consultant and trainer.
